Mike Pence Honors Democracy’s Resilience, Receives JFK Profile in Courage Award

In a powerful moment reflecting on one of the most challenging days in American history, former Vice President Mike Pence described the failure of the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack as a “triumph of freedom.” His remarks came during the prestigious John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award ceremony, where he was recognized for upholding the U.S. Constitution under extraordinary pressure.

Pence, who resisted calls to overturn the 2020 election results, stated that despite the violent attempt to disrupt the democratic process, the perseverance of elected officials and the peaceful certification of the electoral vote showcased the enduring strength of American democracy.

“The failure of that attack was not the end of the story,” Pence said. “It became a powerful moment of national resolve—a triumph of freedom and the rule of law.”

The JFK Library Foundation honored Pence for his unwavering commitment to constitutional duty, even in the face of personal and political risk. The Profile in Courage Award celebrates public officials who demonstrate politically courageous leadership in difficult circumstances.

Pence’s actions on January 6 have become a defining part of his legacy, with the former vice president continuing to advocate for the protection of democratic institutions and principles. His recognition marks a moment of bipartisan respect for constitutional fidelity and personal integrity in American politics.
